Project Overview

The U.S. 69 (18th Street) Bridge over the Kansas River in Kansas City, Kansas (KCK), is one of the few remaining deck truss bridges on the state highway system. Built in 1959, the bridge has undergone numerous rehabilitations over its 60-year life and needs a new design and complete replacement. Read more about the 18th Street Bridge Replacement Project.

18th Street Bridge Design

The project is moving forward and KDOT is preparing for construction to replace the bridge and complete additional improvements in the corridor. The On-Alignment design will replace the bridge at its current location.  Construction will require a full closure of the U.S. 69 (18th Street) Bridge. This will allow for construction to be completed efficiently and safely for both workers and travelers. Additional improvements will be completed at the same time to take advantage of the road closures.

It is anticipated for construction to begin in mid-February with closure of the existing 18th Street Bridge occurring the first week of March. The 18th Street Bridge will be closed through construction and is expected to be completed and the new bridge to open by Fall 2027.

Improvements Include:

KDOT will be implementing additional improvements in the corridor to utilize a full closure of 18th Street and improve motorists’ driving experience. These improvements will include:

  • A new 18th Street Bridge will be constructed to modern design standards
  • Roadway improvements along 18th Street just north and south of the river bridge
  • Bridge rehabilitation on the 18th Street bridges over Ruby Avenue, Metropolitan Avenue, KCT Railway and Osage Avenue
